sam liked the episode more than Jordan! Maybe he hates nonesixtent shrews less, or maybe that musical class is just wearing off on him. Let's find out!
Sam, I have to say I am floored that you graded this higher than I did. As we watched you seemed to find much greater fault with the show at its core than I did. What won you over so much? Also, since this is our first coverage, where do you hope the show will go from here? I'm hoping we see more depth from the primary characters, a quick exit by Will's wife (or at least a demotion to re-occurring bitchy ex wife pronto) and all the Jane Lynch they can pack in.-Jordan
Jordan, I was expecting your question here's why i gave it the grade I did. All of the problems raised in the show were infrastructural. Glee is like a brand spankin' new building that looks beautiful but you can't help but wonder if the foundation is made of toothpicks. In other words, i'm worried about where the show will go with these characters. To be honest I don't really care about any of these people. Sure I'd like to see the romantic couples on the show get together and do the nasty but who gives a shit about what's her face or who da ya call it. I want the members of glee to be people not just singing dancing "gay kid". -Sam
Sam, I feel these characters are almost necessarily archetypes--they're in a show that's simultaneously a musical and about high schoolers, two genres that are full of cliches almost by their nature. I think its a VERY high concept to put on a musical set in a high school in prime time every week, and I'm giving them some slack on the cliches for now because I assume they're settling us in before they develop any character depth.-Jordan
Sam, You're right. My Grade was easily an A-/B+ (the line was being tread by every other scene in that episode) but I HATE, HATE, HATE the unrealistic shrew of a woman andf there is NO reason she and Will would still be together (yet). If she is to stick around, I hope she is the first to be given some depth, and maybe a reason why Will is with her in the first place.-Jordan
Jordan, Who cares if these archetypes are traditional of the genre? Why is a show about being in high school confined to football players and cheerleaders being dicks. I knew plenty of nerds who were insufferable assholes and theatre/glee kids who needed a swift kick in the solar plexis. This is why genre is bad. But that's a whole 'nother can of worms i don't feel like opening -Sam
Sam, I agree, but I think the show is already shoving unconventional cracks into the archetypes. They aren't confining themselves to the genres, I think they're in the beginning stages of very cleverly playing with them. If the cheer coach can suggest hobbling students and an elementary school is putting on Hair, I think we're going to be ok...-Jordan

Jordan,
ReplyDeleteI also think you lowered your grade more than i did thanks to that awful, awful character. You know, what's her face.

Jordan,
ReplyDeleteThis show looks like a wait-and-see type dealie. Strong start which is rare, hopefully they can keep it up.
